Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Mostly for the use of his horse and cart to travel from Ipswich to Cambridge, Massachusetts around the beginning of the American Revolution. Calculations appear on the verso.

Joseph Appleton (b. 1740) was a housewright in Ipswich, Massachusetts who died between 1794 and 1818.
