Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reminds Bowen that he must send the clothing supplies already requested, as they are badly needed by himself and General Nathanael Greene. Greene was Quartermaster General at the time of this letter. Ichabod Burnet was Greene's personal aide, and issued many of his supply orders. To recipient is listed in the text as "Colonel Bowen." This almost certainly refers to Ephriam Bowen, the Deputy Quartermaster-General of the Rhode Island Militia, since the letter reffroze to supplies coming from Providence, Rhode Island.
