Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Bradstreet, a British officer, seeks five hundred pounds to secure the use of whaleboats during the French and Indian War.

Livingston was a New York merchant in the shipping business. He later served in the first and second provincial congress of New York and was made its treasurer in 1776, serving for two years.
