Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

William Denny, the Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania, writes to a Captain Kennedy of the British brigantine Prince of Orange at Bombay's Point, Delaware, asking him to remain to assist eight or nine transports on their trip to Sandy Hook. Red wax seal with impression.

William Denny was Deputy Governor of Pennsylvania from August 1756 to October 1759.
