Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly created in Boston. States "In Council Jan. 4 1758 Read & Conceiv'd Thos. Clarke... Consenteet to Pownall." On verso, contains a partial petition from the town of Boxford, Massachusetts, to the Governor of Massachusetts.

Pownall, a British statesman, served as Royal Governor of Massachusetts 1757-1760.
