Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A receipt for one hundred sixty pounds, twelve shillings owed to Gratz. Signed for by Thomas Walker, John Harvie, John Montgomery, and Jasper Yeates as the "Commissioners for Indian Affairs." The verso is signed by Gratz, as well as Joseph Simon, and dated 13 December 1776.

Barnard Gratz was a Jewish merchant who supplied the Continental Congress with war necessities.
Jasper Yeates was a commissioner for Indian affairs, and later a Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice.
John Montgomery was a member of the Continental Congress.
Thomas Walker was a surveyor and land agent, and the first man to survey the Cumberland Gap.
John Harvie was a member of the Continental Congress.
Joseph Simon was a prominent Jewish Indian trader from Lancaster, Pennsylvania
