At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

This document records the muster role for Captain John W. Wendell's Company in the First Battalion of New York. His company was under the greater command of Colonel Goose Van Schaick. It is signed by John Hansen, Lieutenant Colonel Cornelius Van Dycke, and Lieutenant N. Henry on verso, who attest to the validity of this roll. It was created at Fort Schuyler, New York. It includes notes, names, and terms of enlistment for privates, sergeants, and corporals. Includes some specific remarks regarding soldiers. The muster roll is for the months of January, February, and March of 1779.

Wendell's company was part of the first battalion of New York forces, commanded by Colonel Goose Van Schaick.
