Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Clinton, James (1736-1812) A muster roll of Captain John H. Wendell's company, in the first Battalion of New York Forces, in the service of the United States commanded by Colonel Goose Van Schaick for the month of July 1778.

Signed by Samuel Parker. Signed by General James Clinton, Captain John H. Wendell, and Lieutenant John C. Ten Broek on verso, attesting to the validity of this muster roll. Notes names and terms of enlistment for privates, sergeants, and corporals. Also includes some specific remarks about the soldiers. This muster roll was for the month of July and is noted as such in the docket on verso.

Wendell's company was part of the first battalion of New York forces, commanded by Colonel Goose Van Schaick.
