Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Appoints Zibeon Hooker a first sergeant in the "Sixth Regiment of the Foot in the Continental Army." Signed by Whitcomb as Colonel in the Continental Army. Partially printed.

Asa Whitcomb raised and took command of a regiment in response to the Lexington alarm.
Zibeon Hooker enlisted as a drummer fighting at Bunker Hill, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant.
