Depicts General George Clinton standing next to a bayonet, cannon, and cannon balls. Another soldier stands in the background, with his back to Clinton. The backdrop appears to portray the Hudson River Valley. A printed notation states "From the original painting by Chappel in the possession of the publishers."
George Clinton served as a member of the Continental Congress 1775-1776, Governor of New York 1777-1795 and 1801-1804, and Vice President of the United States 1804-1812 under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Alonzo Chappel, a nineteenth century artist from New York City, specialized in portraits of notable American and European figures and scenes from American history.

The copyright law of the United States (title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be “used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.” If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of “fair use,” that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
