Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The second document is a July 1, 1794 account signed by Henry Jackson, including payments made for a July 4th, 1793 "Feast" for the officers. (Costs include advertising through the publisher of the Columbian Centinel, wine and dinner.) This document is kept in Size 3, Box 008.
