Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

McNeil informs Bedel that he will leave for Detroit in a few days. Notes talking with generals Eleazer Ripley and Benjamin Pierce (McNeil's father-in-law) about Colonel Bedel's merits and seeks continued correspondence. During the War of 1812 McNeil served as a captain under Bedel in the 11th infantry regiment and later became governor of New Hampshire.
