Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes forged signatures of John Adams and John Hancock pasted onto the inside of the front board. Some receipts included are written to Treat & Pico, others to Joshua Pico. Items/services bought and sold include oil, rent of property, schooling of children, molasses, codfish, and hog staves, among various others. Most receipts are written in Boston. Contains various signatures of persons conducting business with Pico.
