Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Tod, Governor of Ohio, provides Senator John Sherman with two railway tickets (not included) for transportation to the 19 November 1863 dedication of the Gettysburg, Pennsylvania soldiers' cemetery. Written on State of Ohio Executive Department stationery.

Sherman served as United States Representative for Ohio, 1855-1860; Senator, 1861-1876 and 1881-1898; and as Secretary of the Treasury, 1877-1881.
