Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written as President. Unaddressed, but probably to Post Master General John McLean. Mentions that they will discuss modifications and improvements that can be made to the department when they meet. Requests that he prepare a statement showing the number of miles the mail is carried, the amount of receipts and expenditures, and what amount remains unaccounted. Written from his estate, Oak Hill, in Virginia. One full length seated engraving of James Monroe included.

…In regard to your department I intimated to you some time since, that I contemplated, suggesting to Congress some modifications, with a view to its improvement on this subject we will confer more fully when I come down; for the present, I have to request, that you will have prepard a statement of the number of miles over which, the mail is carried, according to contract - the amount of receipts & expenditures through the year - what amount remains unaccounted for - either by receipts of post masters, or by advances to Contractors...
