At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Catharine Macaulay from Catharine S. Macaulay dated February 7, 1786. Pertains to her mother's finances and publications. Expresses concern about her finances under the care of Mr. Rudd. Folloing the end of the letter written in the mother's handwriting are notes on patriotism, the necessity of acts of violence committed by government, Helvetius's thoughts on education and the passions of men, etc.
