Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Indicates that his price for a marble bust sculpture is $1000. Informs that he will be in Washington D.C. soon to finish a bust of Vice President Henry Wilson and can stay to begin Sherman's if he so desires. Gives his preferred timing and scheduling for sittings. Thanks him for commissioning the bust and complimenting his skill.

French was an American sculptor whose works primarily depicted eminent Americans and symbolic figures. Sherman was an important Republican leader and a United States Senator from Ohio 1861-1877. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and later as Secretary of State. Wilson was Vice President 1873-1875 under Ulysses S. Grant.
