Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses his willingness to delay his departure for Paris in order to accomodate General William T. Sherman wishes for scheduling sittings for the bust sculpture. States, "I would make much more of a sacrifice than this for the pleasure and honor of portraying the great warrior." Mentions that John Sherman's own bust should have arrived and that he hopes he is approving of it.

French was an American sculptor whose works primarily depicted eminent Americans and symbolic figures. Sherman was an important Republican leader and a United States Senator from Ohio 1861-1877. He also served as Secretary of the Treasury and later as Secretary of State.
