Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Glover signs at Providence, attesting that this document was sworn before him 23 April (on verso). Lieutenant Michal Houdin also signs on verso, attesting to the validity of this pay roll. Lists officer names, rank, length of service, and amount of pay. States that Hodgkins's Company was part of a regiment commanded by Colonel Timothy Bigelow.
