Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Header: "Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co." Re: letter certifying that Edwin T. Kerr and associates were sold "...a quantity of the punchings from the [metal] plates used in the construction of the U.S. Battleship 'Illinois.' " The understanding was that these would be "...manufactued into souvenirs of the launching of the ship..."
