At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Front cover: "Notes on a trip to Europe in 1878--" Inside back cover: "Memorandum book of E. R. Archer Richmond, Virginia July 20, 1878." From the front [to back], the book acts as a narrative diary, and includes drawings and descriptions of machinery for water works, steel manufacturing, and other industrial pursuits. From the back [to front], the book is an expense account beginning shortly before Archer embarked on the trip. The middle of the book recounts vacation in Ireland, Scotland, London, Paris and Germany with a list of purchases made in these countries. Calf bound, title inscribed on front cover in Archer's hand.
