Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

For William G. Brownlow for Governor of Tennessee. Lists John Eaton Jr. for Superintendent of Public Instruction, R.R. Butler for Congress and for State Senate, PPC Nelson. Also has blank space for Representative, and Floater.

Brownlow was editor of the influential Knoxville Whig. In October 1861, his paper was suppressed by the Confederates, and Brownlow was imprisoned until March 1862. Brownlow later served as Governor of Tennessee from 1865 to 1869.
