Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Invoice of equipment ransferred from Lieutenant Alva Z. Rogers to Lieutenant Heber Painter.

Thomas Birmingham enlisted in the Union Army on 29 October 1861 as First Sergeant and mustered into "I" Co. Pennsylvania 58th Infantry. He was promoted several times during his service; his last promotion being to Captain on 1 March 1865. He was mustered out on 24 January 1866 at City Point, Virginia.
