Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

John Hested enlisted in the Union Army on 5 September 1861 as a private and mustered into A Company Pennsylvania 58th Infantry. He was promoted to Hospital Steward on 1 March 1862 and mustered out on 24 January 1866 at City Point, Virginia.
