At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Invoice for contents turned over to Heber Painter by Captain Charles Stevens. The invoice includes saddles, blankets, curb bridles, halters and straps, combs and horse brushes.

Captain Charles L. Stevens enlisted on 1 September 1862 as a first lieutenant and was commissioned into H Company 67th Ohio Infantry. He was mustered out on 7 December 1865 in City Point, Virginia and served as Provost Marshal of Hanover County, Virginia.
