Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed by Wolcott as Secretary of Treasury. Details amendments made to an act passed 6 July 1797 concerning duties on paper.

Wolcott was appointed the second Secretary of the Treasury after Alexander Hamilton. He served under George Washington 1795-1797 and under John Adams 1797-1800.
