Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Regarding the Battle of Chancellorsville, writes that there is "a great deal of excitement about Genl Hookers last defeat if such it can be called, it is verry currently Reported here this morning that he is again crossing, But I do not think it is correct... there has been another terrible slaughter on both sides..."
