Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses his ordeal trying to obtain leave, including a friend's recommendation to General [Samuel] Heintzelman. Of the war, writes, "...I have saw enough of Blood to last me my life time..." References a Confederate attack on a train, and criticizes the Vermont troops that were on board. Promises to send a song called the "[Rovers] Grave."
