Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Includes five separate pages of watercolors that were possibly previously bound in the log. Includes daily entries of the whaling voyage and numerous miscellaneous newspaper clippings, poems, and songs. Many entries are accompanied by an ink stamp in the shape of a whale. Watercolors cover the inside front and back covers. Including Ship "Orrigon," showing pirate flag, ship "Washington" on verso.
