Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Smith writes to Renshaw with orders to discharge Colonel Wallace Wilson of the 1st Colored Brigade,"he having originally enlisted for one year." The order also extends to "any other Contrabands on board the 'Agawam'." Forwarded by Commodore Joseph Lanman. Written on stationery of the Navy Department Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting.
