Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General Rosecrans writes, "Orders to come to See You Telegraph me at Harpers Ferry or Martinsburg or send word to Winchester when I can meet you." Date indicated as "12th 1863," most likely June 12, 1863 during the Gettysburg Campaign, only a few days before Winchester was evacuated by the federal forces. Letter is secretarially written and signed.
