Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Comments on the present difficulties faced by engineers, but sees better times ahead. Says that Texas has "a big and a bright future, far more promising than any other southern State." Claims the state now needs more laborers to reorganize the society and the economy for future growth.

Thomas F. Pinckney was a civil engineer who lived in Texas.
Braxton Bragg was a Major General for the Confederate Army during the Civil War. In 1874 he moved to Texas and became chief engineer for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company.
