Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses his attempt to persuade a Senator regarding an unspecified matter of Hunt's interest (possibly regarding a bill that would affect Hunt's retirement rank). In 1884, Elbridge Gerry Lapham and Warner Miller were the United States Senators from New York.

Among various other military posts, Hunt served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He was governor of the Soldiers' Home in Washington, D.C. from 1883 until his death. Sharpe served with the Army of the Potomac, and was brevetted brigadier general in 1864 and major general in 1865. In 1884, Elbridge Gerry Lapham and Warner Miller served as United States Senators from New York.
