At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

McLane discusses assisting Henry Jackson Hunt. Possibly referring to a bill Hunt attempted to pass regarding military retirement pay, remarks "I will help Hunt all I can when the committees are organized I will see the chairman of the Military Committee and ascertain [how?] & where I can do the work... " McLane served as a United States Representative from Maryland 1847-1850 and 1879-1883, and Governor of Maryland 1883-1885. General Mackall served as chief-of-staff under Generals Braxton Bragg and Joseph E. Johnston, among other posts. Written on McLane's law office stationery.
