At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Year inferred from content. Logan, a United States Senator from Illinois, informs Welles, a lawyer, that he has not had time to review the matter of General Henry Jackson Hunt's retirement. Remarks "I do not doubt the truthfulness of all you say in behalf of Gen. Hunt and I do not now know of any reason why I should oppose his bill." Welles, a Civil War veteran from Ohio, was appointed Brigadier General 13 March 1865 by Brevet.

According to the American Civil War Database, Welles was a Civil War soldier from Ohio, and was appointed Brigadier General 13 March 1865 by Brevet. Logan served as a General in the Civil War. General Henry Jackson Hunt served as Governor of the Soldiers Home in Washington, D.C. from 1883 until his death.
