Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Captain Stanton lists shot, shrapnel, shell, and canister. Also transmits the report of the Quartermaster of wagons. Directs this report to Captain Whittelsey, possibly Henry Martyn Whittelsey, an Assistant Adjutant General. Includes several charts pertaining to artillery stores. Probably written in Virginia before the Battle of Cold Harbor. Written in pencil.

Stanton served in the New York 74th Infantry.
