Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brevet Major signs as commander of an artillery brigade, 6th Corps, Army of the Potomac. Forwards a weekly report pertaining to stations of batteries under his command. Directs this report to Captain Bissell, Acting Assistant Adjutant General, Artillery Headquarters, Army of the Potomac. Bissell was Hunt's aide-de-camp.

In early 1865, the Army of the Potomac was active in operations against Petersburg. Bissell served as aide-de-camp for General Henry Jackson Hunt, Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac.
