Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Wainwright signs as Brevet Brigadier General commanding an artillery brigade, Army of the Potomac. Transmits a report listing commanding officers, position, number, and caliber of guns for eleven batteries to Bissell, Captain and Acting Assistant Adjutant General. Possibly intended for C. T. Bissell, aide-de-camp to General Henry Jackson Hunt. Probably created in Virginia.

In early 1865, the Army of the Potomac was active in operations against Petersburg.
