Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Possibly created in Virginia. Tidball signs as Brevet Brigadier General commanding artillery brigade, 9th corps, Army of the Potomac. Lists positions, number of guns, and commanding officers of several batteries and corps. Accompanied by a fragmented wrapper, which is also docketed: "Stations of Artillery, and Field Returns / Army of the Potomac / Reports of Genl Tidball Majors Hazard, Ricketts & others, in reference to the condition of the forts in the line & Magazines& amts. of ammunition &c. in hand" Wrapper may have originally held .185 and other Hunt Collection returns.

In March of 1865, the Army of the Potomac was active in operations against Petersburg.
