Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Hazard, commanding an artillery brigade in the 2nd Corps, Army of the Potomac, reports the positions of batteries in his command. Transmits his report to Craig, Assistant Adjutant General, Artillery Headquarters, Army of the Potomac. Probably created in Virginia.

In March 1865, the Army of the Potomac was active in operations against Petersburg.
