Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Brevet Major Adams forwards a weekly report to Brevet Major Craig, Assistant Adjutant General, Artillery Headquarters, Army of the Potomac. Lists the number and caliber of guns for eleven batteries. A note on page two indicates that the 14th Massachusetts Battery left Adams's command and reported to General John C. Tidball, Chief of Artillery, 9th Army Corps.

In March 1865, the Army of the Potomac was active in operations against Petersburg.
