Possibly by Major General William Earle. Notes that he recently missed a visit from a Mr. [Washmore?]. Will be staying in France for three months on holiday. Notes that despite reporting in London newspapers, many Englishmen are not satisfied with the politics of Lord Beaconsfield (Benjamin Disraeli, the Earl of Beaconsfield, British Prime Minister in 1868 and 1874-1880). Admits that he disagrees with some of Beaconsfield's measures, but praises the present peace. Notes that he recently assumed command of a battalion of grenadiers, and expects promotion to Major General.

Hunt had served as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He was military commander at Charleston, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia 1875-1880.
