Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Praises Rosencrantz, who served as an aide-de-camp to one of the commanders of the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. Notes that Rosencrantz's brevets obtained during the Civil War were not confirmed by Senate due to an act of Congress. Richards signs as First Lieutenant, 16th Infantry, Adjutant.
