Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Explains that while he had suggested a certain level of meat rations for the recipients troops, the Secretary of War has chosen a different amount. Though he disagrees with the Secretary, he advises the recipients to follow this higher authority. These orders are part of the planning for battle against the Indians.

"Mad" Anthony Wayne was appointed commander in chief of the United States army in 1792, and sent to subdue the Indians on the frontier of the Northwest Territory.
