Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Marked "send in cypher" at bottom. Writes to Colonel Hayes of the 23rd Ohio to give instructions on their next move. Tells him to be ready to move by Wednesday. "Ammunition, Tents & 10 days rations for men & horses will be ready. Make no unusual bustle. The order was sent in Cypher. So mum." Reports that the brigade will move to Flat Top and Princeton, Virginia and will scout Logan, Monroe and Mercer Counties. Asks him if he can learn something about a road opening to Logan Court House. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
