Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to General Cox commanding the division in Charleston, West Virginia to report on scouting activities. Gives locations of Confederate troops around Lewisburg, West Virginia. States, "Rebs. are pressing Militia into services...Enemy intend to fire & face back to destroy bridge over Green Brier Rd." Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.
