Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

"List of property taken from Mrs. E.A. Tyre --- at different times, since the 15th of November 1861 by the 3rd Provl Brigade." Lists includes one horse, 20 sheep, 6 hogs, wagons, wheat, flax and other sundries. Eliakim P. Scammon was Colonel of the 3rd Brigade.
