At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Inquires about the state of his book order, and the page missing from the Nautical Almanac for 1774, which he previously ordered (see GLC02437.00046 and GLC02437.00053). Reiterates that no one who uses the Nautical Almanac would purchase it with such important information missing. Oliver one of the founders of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Philosophical Society. He published an "Essay on Comets" the previous year.
