Informs Knox that Samuel Hodgdon seeks his determination in regard to a commission for military uniforms. In a post script, asks if he may obtain clothes for his company immediately. In 1776, Hodgdon was a lieutenant in the Marines, and he later became the commissary general of military stores. Stevens had recently been appointed a captain in Knox's regiment of artillery.

I this day Recd A Letter from Samuel Hodgden by which I was Informed that he waited upon your Honour Concerning the making the Regimental Uniform for the Regiment under Your Command, and that you Gave him Some Encouragement of his having the Jobb and as he is Desirous of knowing your Determination about the Matter that he may Govern himself accordingly he Desird me to write him An Answer As Speedily as I could - I should be Extremely Glad if you would be so kind as to give me Answer to this, as Soon as is Convenient that I may be able to Inform him Accordingly which will Oblige your [2] Humble Servant
P.S. be so kind as [to] let me know whether I may Draw the Cloathe for my Company and Get it made myself as the men are Desirous of having it Soon, as they are very Bare of Cloathing -
