Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

States that Jeremiah Niles and Henry Burbeck have been paid for time served in 1776. Verso is signed by Thomas Proctor. Likely written at Fishkill, New York, where these men were stationed at the time.

Jeremiah Niles was a Captain Lieutenant under Knox in the 3d Continental Artillery.
Henry Burbeck served under Knox during the American Revolution, and later rose as high as Brevet Brigadier-General.
Thomas Proctor served as a Colonel under Knox.
